The body needs many minerals; these are called essential minerals. Like vitamins, minerals are substances found in food that your body needs for growth and health. There are two kinds of minerals: macrominerals and trace minerals. These two groups of minerals are equally important, but trace minerals are needed in smaller amounts than major minerals. Macrominerals are minerals your body needs in larger amounts. They include calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, and chloride. Your body needs just small amounts of trace minerals. These include iron, copper, iodine, zinc, fluoride, and selenium.
The amounts needed in the body are not an indication of their importance.
A balanced diet usually provides all of the essential minerals. The pictures below list minerals, what they do in the body (their functions), and their sources in food.
